Though departing from the source material, Ron Kovic's stirring chronicle of his Vietnam experience, this film is a good companion piece to Oliver Stone's Oscar-winner Platoon, showcasing star Tom Cruise in one of his most powerful dramatic performances。 A forceful and admirably heartfelt performance by Tom Cruise galvanizes this picture, which should be more powerful than it is considering the darkness and fullness of the emotions at its center. As deeply felt as Platoon, as graphic and unrelenting as Salvador, but it's less manipulative than the former and more dramatically integrated than the latter, because Cruise anchors the movie.
